💚 Tomorrow is Phelan-McDermid Syndrome Awareness Day! 💚

Meet Taylor, a student at the Hewes Educational Center, whose smile and laughter can brighten anyone’s day. Taylor lives at home with his mom, dad, and older sister, Abby. He loves riding his bike, going for walks, watching videos on his iPad, and playing outside. Taylor also loves to give and receive hugs and has the best belly laugh you’ll ever hear. 💚

Although he may look perfectly healthy, Taylor has Phelan-McDermid Syndrome (PMS) — a rare genetic disorder that impacts the production of a vital protein his brain needs. Because of PMS, Taylor experiences severe cognitive delays, is nonverbal, and has low muscle tone, pica, behavioral challenges, significant GI issues like constipation and acid reflux, and epilepsy. His long eyelashes — one of his most noticeable features — are also a signature trait of PMS!

Taylor’s care team at the Cleveland Clinic works closely with his family to manage his health, and it’s a good thing he loves car rides and his school bus — because he makes plenty of trips! 🚗🚌

Every year on Oct. 22, people around the world wear green and light up landmarks to raise awareness for Phelan-McDermid Syndrome. Even the arches in Brocton and the streetlights near Taylor’s home will glow green to show support. 🌎💚

Let’s join together to support Taylor and others living with PMS by wearing green tomorrow, sharing his story, and helping shine a light on this rare condition.
