The arrival of Earth Day at the LoGuidice Educational Center was once again marked with greenery and hands-on learning as students participated in the school’s annual potted plant giveaway.
As part of the event, juniors and seniors from Career & Technical Education programs visited the Conservation/Natural Resource Management greenhouse to select a student-grown plant to take home.
This year’s project again received added support through a $1,000 Service Learning Mini-Grant from the Northern Chautauqua Community Foundation. The funding helped cover the cost of seeds, pots, and soil used to grow the plants shared during the event.
Plants available for selection included petunias, known for their vibrant, trumpet-shaped blooms; zinnias, fast-growing and heat-tolerant annuals; and marigolds, valued for their easy care and natural pest-management benefits.
By planting, caring for, and preparing the flowers for distribution, CTE students gained valuable experience in greenhouse operations, plant care, and sustainable practices while giving back to the school community.
Earth Day is observed each year on April 22 and began in 1970 as a national effort to promote environmental awareness. It has since grown into a worldwide movement focused on conservation, sustainability, and protecting natural resources.
At LoGuidice, the annual giveaway reflects that mission by encouraging students to take home something they helped grow while recognizing the importance of caring for the environment.
Instructor Taylor Beaver and teaching assistant Ericka Tenpas coordinated this year’s event, continuing a tradition that highlights student success, service learning, and environmental stewardship.
