Juniors and seniors enrolled in the Culinary Arts program at the Carrier Educational Center were recently able to make their cakes, and then eat them, too.
The Career & Technical Education students competed in the highly popular cake decorating contest under the guidance of Culinary Arts instructor Sandy Kaleta and Nicole Kaleta, consultant teacher.
At the beginning of the contest, each student was assigned a cake theme and flavor. They then spent three class periods preparing, baking, and decorating their cakes.
“For a great cake, in general, it’s all about the consistency of the cake itself,” said Nicole Kaleta. “A nice, thick cake is great for holding decorations, especially if they’re going to use fondant or frosting. Overall, what we look for is creativity.”
Students from other CTE programs, along with faculty and staff at Carrier, then picked their favorite cakes.
