The E2CCB Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Advisory Council hosted a virtual Fireside Chat this spring to celebrate the organization’s ongoing commitment to creating inclusive, equitable and affirming educational environments. The webinar brought employees together from across the region to share experiences and discuss the impact a true sense of belonging has on both students and adult learners. Lisa Walker, Associate Director of Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion, noted that an inclusive climate serves as a foundational driver for academic improvement, social-emotional growth, and reduced anxiety for everyone in the school system.
The event featured a student-centered video produced by Public Relations Specialist Carrie Lynch, which highlighted personal perspectives from students who expressed feeling seen, heard, and supported in their classrooms. Following the video, a staff panel facilitated by Liz Schanbacher showcased unique success stories illustrating inclusion in action across various E2CCB programs. The panelists shared how individuals are being valued daily, from collaborative bilingual efforts bridging communication gaps to intentional peer connections that help students thrive.
Among the highlights, ENL Teacher Katie Sprovkin discussed the successful integration of Spanish and English literacy skills within the unique environment of the Bloom program. Adult & Community Education Data Manager Colleen Newton shared a heartening story of an 85-year-old student who returned to the classroom to earn her high school equivalency diploma in just two months. Teacher of the Blind Sarah Zielonka described how she helped two students, hesitantly entering middle school, build community by facilitating the growth of their friendship through pen-palling in Braille. Additionally, Distance Learning Specialist Elizabeth Huson emphasized how E2CCB employees consistently model a supportive atmosphere that transforms the school environment into a true home.
Faculty and staff are encouraged to keep sharing their success stories and stay connected through the Collaboration Corner updates published twice a month by Communications & Development. Staff members who missed the live broadcast of the Fireside Chat can view the recording.
