
Students from the Hewes Educational Center and WNY P-TECH participated in this year’s STEM Wars Technology Competition, Career Fair, and Tech Expo at Northwest Arena in Jamestown.
The two-day event, held May 21 and 22, was again organized by Dream It Do It WNY.
In addition to participating in a host of competitions, participants could meet and interact with area manufacturers, colleges, and community organizations related to the manufacturing sector.
All told, about 550 middle- and high school students participated in STEM Wars to showcase projects built at their home schools to promote science, technology, engineering, and math.
This year, competitions included the 2X4 Challenge, Bridge Design Balsa Wood Challenge, Bridge Design CNC Laser Cut Challenge, CAD Design Challenge, Cardboard Furniture Creations, Catapult Cornhole, CO2 Cars-Short Track Competition, DIDI 500-Self Powered Vehicles Challenge, Interview Challenge Rubric, Interview Challenge Skills Interest, Interview Challenge Application, Maker Event, and Robotic Event-Full Volume.
Erie 2-Chautauqua-Cattaraugus BOCES once again had a strong showing this year. From WNY P-TECH, Logan Smith of Jamestown took first place in the Bridge Design Balsa Wood Challenge.
Also from WNY P-TECH, Hernan Colon Ortiz of Dunkirk placed in the Bridge Design CNC Laser Cut Challenge.
Owen Spitz and Logan Douglas from E Building at Hewes placed in Cardboard Furniture Creations.
Helping at STEM Wars from Hewes were Career & Technical Education instructor Mike Dietzen and Alexandria Smith, teaching assistant; from Hewes E Building, Elizabeth Kaltenbach; and from WNY P-TECH, teachers Matt Edwards and Nick Anson; and School Counselor Nicole Donato.
