The Hewes Educational Center recently held its first-ever Career and Technical Education (CTE) Spirit Week, giving students and staff a chance to show off their programs while coming together for a good cause.
The student-led effort highlighted CTE programs through Erie 2-Chautauqua-Cattaraugus BOCES and included a donation drive for the Ashville Food Pantry.
At the center of the week was a Junior vs. Senior competition that paired themed dress-up days with giving back. Students took part in days like Safety First Day, Career Switch Day, and Dress Like a CTE Staff Member Day, with participation tied to bringing in non-perishable items.
By the end of the week, juniors had collected 193 pounds of donations, while seniors brought in 316 pounds.

“This event was more than just a spirit week; it was a chance for our school community to come together around a shared purpose,” said Aaron Taylor, CTE school counselor at Hewes. “We were truly impressed by the level of student engagement and the way our students embraced the importance of giving back.”
The week also gave students and staff time to connect ahead of Spring Recess while supporting neighbors in need. Organizers said it was a strong example of student-led service in action, with participants showing leadership, empathy, and a real commitment to helping others.
“Giving back reminds us that small actions can have a big impact,” said Alissa Rinaldo, CTE school social worker. “These experiences help students understand that leadership isn’t just about personal success — it’s about how we support and uplift others.”
