Internet-Enabled Devices Policy

Beginning in the 2025–26 school year, Erie 2-Chautauqua-Cattaraugus BOCES (E2CCB) will implement a new policy limiting student use of internet-enabled devices—such as smartphones, smartwatches, and tablets—during the school day. This policy aligns with New York State’s new “Distraction-Free Schools” law and was developed in collaboration with students, families, and staff to support focused learning and student well-being. Devices must be stored in designated, secure areas throughout the day, and may only be used with permission for educational purposes, health needs, emergencies, translation services, or as required by a student’s IEP or 504 Plan. Schools will provide clear guidelines for storage and offer multiple ways for families to contact students during the day, such as through the main office or approved messaging tools. Students will not be suspended solely for violating this policy, and starting in 2026, E2CCB will publish an annual report to ensure equitable enforcement across all schools.
