Erie 2-Chautauqua-Cattaraugus BOCES proudly congratulates Board of Education member Christine Schnars on her installation as President of the New York State School Boards Association (NYSSBA). Schnars was officially sworn in during NYSSBA’s annual convention and education expo in New York City on October 24.
A respected voice in public education for more than three decades, Schnars brings deep experience and unwavering commitment to her new statewide leadership role.
“I am very honored to have been elected presi dent of this organization,” Schnars said. “I look forward to working with our wonderful executive director to keep things moving forward and prepare our member boards for the future.”
Schnars has served on the Jamestown Public Schools Board of Education for 33 years, including terms as president and vice president, and is currently serving her third term since returning to the board in 2017. Her longstanding advocacy has earned recognition from colleagues across the region.
“Having Mrs. Schnars installed as NYSSBA president speaks to her years of service and commitment,” said Paul Abbott, Jamestown Public Schools Board of Education President. “It is an honor not only for her, but for our district and our entire region.”
Jamestown Superintendent Dr. Kevin Whitaker added, “Chris has shown her commitment to JPS students for many years. Her tireless work for the benefit of others is inspiring.”
Before becoming NYSSBA President, Schnars served as First Vice President and as Area 3 Director, representing school boards across Chautauqua, Cattaraugus, Allegany, and Steuben counties. She also brings extensive leadership experience from the New York State PTA Board of Governors, the Chautauqua County School Boards Association, and the Fletcher Elementary School PTA.
In addition to her statewide roles, Schnars continues to serve on the Erie 2-Chautauqua-Cattaraugus BOCES Board of Education, where her thoughtful leadership and passion for student success strengthen regional collaboration.
A proud Jamestown High School alumna, Schnars raised her four children—also JHS graduates—with her late husband Jim. She now has five grandchildren attending Jamestown Public Schools, continuing a family legacy of connection and service to public education.
E2CCB extends its heartfelt congratulations to Christine Schnars and looks forward to the impact her leadership will bring to school boards across New York State.
