Career & Technical Education students from the LoGuidice Educational Center recently put their classroom learning into practice during a community wellness initiative focused on health education and preventive care.
The inaugural collaboration between Erie 2-Chautauqua-Cattaraugus BOCES and Chautauqua Health & Fitness brought together students from the Sports Conditioning & Exercise Science program, led by instructor Cleon Clayton, and the Health Careers program, led by instructor Melissa Seelbinder.
Over the course of four hours at Chautauqua Health & Fitness, 15 students provided a range of wellness services to community members, including blood pressure screenings, body composition analysis using an InBody system, basic fitness assessments, and posture evaluations to help identify potential musculoskeletal concerns.
Participants also received informational materials on healthy eating, physical activity, and local wellness resources.
In total, about 35 individuals participated in body composition testing, while more than 60 community members attended overall.
The effort was supported in part by a $1,000 Service Learning Mini-Grant from the Northern Chautauqua Community Foundation, which helped fund the purchase of an InBody 120 Body Composition Analyzer.
Chautauqua Health & Fitness further supported the event by providing the facility and staff assistance, helping ensure the screenings and educational components were delivered in a professional setting aligned with industry standards.
