Water Safety Information
Swimming and other water activities can be enjoyable, but safety should always come first. Follow these New York State Department of Health recommendations to help prevent drowning, waterborne illness and swimmer’s itch.
Swim Safely
- Always swim with another person, preferably at a public beach or pool with lifeguards.
- Keep young children within arm’s reach. Lifeguards and life jackets do not replace close adult supervision.
- Avoid alcohol and drugs when swimming.
- Never swim during storms or when lightning is present.
- Do not dive unless you know the water is at least 8 feet deep.
- If you cannot swim, avoid water deeper than chest level.
- Wear a U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket when boating. Water wings and inflatable floats are not substitutes for life jackets.
Know the Signs of Drowning
Drowning can happen quickly and silently. Learn basic swimming and CPR skills, watch others closely around water and call 911 immediately if someone is in danger.
Help Prevent Illness
Avoid swallowing swimming water, and rinse off before and after swimming. Do not enter the water if you have diarrhea, open cuts or wounds, and avoid water that appears cloudy or discolored. Take children on frequent bathroom breaks.
Protect Against Swimmer’s Itch
Swimmer’s itch is an itchy rash caused by parasites found in areas with waterfowl and snails. To reduce your risk:
- Avoid swimming or wading near waterfowl, snails, weeds, algae blooms, surface scum or cloudy water.
- Rinse off and towel dry thoroughly after leaving the water.
- Do not scratch an affected area, as this can lead to infection.
Most cases improve on their own. Anti-itch creams, cool compresses and colloidal oatmeal baths may help relieve symptoms. Contact a health care provider if itching is severe.
